The purpose of this Physics 150 lab is to validate the Lorentz Transformation, to study the Photoelectric Effect and derive a value for the Planck Constant, as well as estimate the charge of an electron using data from the Millikan Oil Drop Experiment. In Study 1 you will confirm the Relativistic relationship between mass and velocity. In Study 2 you will study the Photoelectric Effect. In Study 3 you will analyze data from the Millikan oil drop experiment and estimate the charge of an electron. The purpose of this lab is to study some properties of light photons, to learn how logarithms can be used to find a power law relationship, and to use this technique to derive the Wien Displacement Law and Stefan-Boltzmann Law. The Temperature of the Surface of the Sun will be estimated using the Wien Displacement Law. Using the Wien Displacement Law it is possible to provide a simple derivation of the Planck Expression.
